Brymbo Bottle Chimney on 25th of November, 1962

Without doubt, two of the best known landmarks in the Brymbo area are the Brymbo Bottle Chimney and the nearby Top Brymbo Pool.

The chimney, dating back to John Wilkinson’s era, was built around 1792 / 94. It is recognised as being one of his earliest industrial undertakings in the area and formed part of his nearby Lead Smelting Plant.

The chimney once stood over 100 feet high (more than 32 metres) before being partially demolished on the 25th November 1962, to leave only a stub of 25 ft (around eight metres).

Top Brymbo Pool was once a natural lake of three acres. It was enlarged to a five acre reservoir 1892, and again enlarged to eight acres in 1958. Its purpose was to provide a constant source of water for the Steel Plant. Supply of water to the reservoir was from the River Cegidog at Ffrith where a purpose made pump house had been operational since 1910.

Low level of water in Top Brymbo Pool Following the closure of the steel plant, the Ffrith pumps were decommissioned in 1994. This resulted in a dramatic fall in water levels at the pool due to leakage. During 1996 remedial work was undertaken by Parkhill Estates, now owners of the former steel plant and associated land, to seal the bed of the former reservoir with clay, therefore preventing further leakage. The current area of the reservoir is around three acres.

Footpaths and trees were introduced around the pool and it is now a very popular area for walking. From the pool, around half a mile of "Offas Dyke" can be seen.

Above Brymbo is the Old Penrhos Engine House. It is easily accessible and is said to date from Wilkinson’s era.

At nearby Wrexham Museum there are the remains of the 3500 year old Brymbo Beaker Man, discovered 1957 when the housing estate of Cheshire View was being built.

The Garden of Remembrance, located off High Street in the centre of the village proudly bears the names of Brymbo men lost in action from two World Wars.
