Although
the site is now unrecognisable from its Steelwork's days, it is
hoped that one small area can be retained and redeveloped as a heritage
area.
This "Heritage Area" encompasses the
oldest area of the Steelworks, and includes John Wilkinson's "Old
Number 1" blast furnace, the Pattern Makers' Shop, the Foundry,
the Machine Shop and the Agent's house.
The areas around these buildings was overgrown
and in some cases the encroaching undergrowth was threatening the
buildings' structure. We are active in making sure that the Heritage
Area does not decay any further.
We are working with the current owners of the
site, to ensure that the Heritage Area can be retained. In the short-term
this means promoting the area through hosting group visits. In the
long term we are hoping to secure funding through grants to develop
the area so that 200 years of steelmaking will not be forgotten. |
