The Group

In 1990 Brymbo Steelworks was closed after almost 200 years of iron and steel making. Apart from the devastating effect that this had on the local community, it also brought an end to heavy industry in the area.

Over the intervening years, a group of local villagers and ex-steelworkers met regularly to share and document their memories of the steelworks and of the industrial history of the Brymbo area. During 2005 the original group of twelve members decided to form the Brymbo Heritage Group. The foundation meeting was held in the Brymbo Sports and Social complex on May the 18th, 2005.

The geographical area covered by the Brymbo Heritage Group includes the immediate area of Brymbo, Tan-y-Fron, Vron, Southsea, Moss plus other local communities and sites as appropriate.

The group has encouraged local schools to become involved in its activities. We have had active contact with the local primary schools at Brymbo, Blacklane and Tanyfron together with the senior school of Bryn Alyn at Gwersyllt. Some of these schools have visited the steelworks site as part of their class projects.

Over the internet we have been answering questions relating to industrial history from as far away as Ireland to the west and Gdasnk to the east.

The Brymbo Heritage Group is looking for new members to join!

The aim of the group is to promote and study the local history and industrial heritage of the Brymbo area. We meet at least once a month, and have a varied and interesting list of engagements. For more information please see our news page.

We intend that our activities will help to engender pride in the local community. We hope that we can actively link generations so that they understand, appreciate and help sustain local heritage. Involving local schools and colleges is seen as a key part of this process.

If you are interested in joining our group (as an individual, society or other body) then we would be delighted to hear from you. If you feel that you would like to make a submission for inclusion on our web site, or if you have some photographs or articles that you feel that we could use then please get in touch via our contact us page. We are actively looking for support and peoples time in running the group. We look forward to hearing from you soon!
